One of most
important and precious natural resources in this world is water. It is an
essential element without which life will cease to exist. Australia, in
comparison to other places in the world, has a scarcity of drinking water. Having access to clean drinking
water is amongst the most basic human rights of every individual. However, this
scarce precious natural resource is depleting at a very fast pace. There have been several instances that have
recorded a shortage of water. Based on this reason, the trend towards saving
and conserving rainwater is on the rise.
For
this purpose, many households in Australia have installed rainwater storage tanks on their roof tops. The equipment for the collection and
storage of rainwater is called a rain water tank. The collected water from rainfall
can be utilized for various purposes such as cleaning, washing, gardening and
many other water related activities. The process for the collection of
rainwater is carried out through small pipes and gutters. In the country side
areas of Australia and many other parts of the world, rain water tanks are
commonly placed in almost all households and buildings. The rain falls on the
surface of roof tops and from there it is collected and stored in a rainwater
tank. The pipes and gutters are placed on the roofs in an effective manner.
They are connected with the walls and carry the collection of water directly
into the tank.
The
decision to use rain water tanks is a personal preference. Its trend is growing
and the government is quite encouraging towards this growth. According to many
current studies and health authorities in the world,
rainwater from a well-maintained system is a useful source of clean water.
However, it is never recommended for drinking purpose of human beings.
Additional treatment may be required to make it consumable by people
particularly in urban areas. Apart from drinking, it can easily be used for flushing
toilets, washing clothes and other equipment, cleaning cars, watering of plants
and trees. It can also be utilized for raising cattle animals like buffaloes,
cows, sheep, goats and chickens.
With
the combined efforts of many, more awareness about this cause can be spread to
increase the preservation and conservation of this precious source of water. Rainwater
tanks are, therefore, a very cost effective and efficient manner of storing a
free source of water and using it for daily needs.
