The Basic Principles Behind Interior Design

Interior designing and interior decoration are two different things and people need to understand the primary difference between them. Interior designing is an art or creative job. It refers to introducing new ideas to
decorate the interiors of a home. An interior designer is a professional who performs this job on behalf of his customer. He strives to make such designs that have relations with each other. Every pattern or design should justify the other and they should be linked together, when looked closely.

Those who are considered experts in this field say that every area or room should be a balanced room in terms of visual weight. Now, there are three types of balances including symmetrical, asymmetrical and radial. In the symmetrical balance, each side of the room is an exact copy of the other. This approach was more seen in traditional homes. Today, what we see in homes is the practice of asymmetrical balance where equal visual weight is achieved by placing dissimilar objects. In the third type of balancing, that is radial symmetry, the elements are set such that they are pointing towards a common center point.

They say, for an interior design, boredom is the biggest enemy that prevents viewer to look more in the room. There should be a main center point in every room that is called the focal point as well. It is, however, recommended that the focal point should be of provoking nature. It must provoke people to look further around the room and enjoy the design and architecture of the room. So, they always try to focus more on the focal point. These days, the items like a fireplace or a flat TV often act as focal point. Focal points are also created artificially, if you don’t have a natural focal point in your space.

Another important principle in interior designing is the rhythm. In order to fully understand and practice this concept, you will have to first learn about repetition, progression, transition and contract. Rhythm is nothing but the repetition of a visual pattern. They define is as organized movement of eye from one object to the other.

Repetition is the reoccurrence of the same aspect in the same targeted space for more than one time. You can repeat a line, pattern or color in one room more than one time. In progression, you increase or decrease the qualities of an element. Transition is the simple movement of the eye from one element to the other. The elements in the space should be designed so that they have ability to guide the eye of the viewer from one element to the other. As the name implies, contrast is the opposition of two elements in terms of shape, design, pattern and color, like two pillows of the same size on a sofa but with different colors.
