How Fleet Management Works

Before talking about the working mechanism of fleet management system, it is important to first have a look at its definition. Fleet management system is a modern-day technology through which you can keep an eye on your vehicle. It is way different than those trekking devices that work with global positioning system and are just used to locate the location of the vehicle. Fleet management system is actually much advanced technology than a general trekking device.

This system can diagnose vehicle for all potential problems and send the report to a central computer system. There is an on-board computer fixed on every vehicle from which data is collected. The on-board computer notes down the mileage driven by the vehicle and makes reports for every problem found. It especially keeps an eye on vehicle’s engine and transmission system. The data received through the on-board computer is sent to central computer via a wireless network. The central computer saves the data and uploads it on a secure website from where it can be viewed at any time. Fleet management system locates the location of the vehicle via global positioning system. However, it is better than those conventional trekking devices in a sense it also looks for any potential problems and errors.

The back-end software receives data from the on-board vehicle computer and extracts the readings for the following parameters: fuel efficiency, fuel consumed, emission status, vehicle alerts, vehicle’s present speed and diagnostic analysis. Similarly, the same back-end software system is also capable of retrieving information regarding the location of the vehicle. This information is written in a separate column. For this, the software notes down readings for the following parameters: vehicle’s locations and driving directions.

Fleet management systems can be installed on any type of vehicle. Depending upon the size of the vehicle, there might be some changing in the design and working criteria of the software. This system is best for light trucks and all kinds of cars.

This system is usually used by the leasing companies. They track the location of their vehicles through this system and receive data about the mechanical health of the vehicle. If anything goes wrong in the engine or anywhere else, the on-board computer informs them about it in advance. In this way, they fix the problem before it gets too complicated. These fleet management systems are also capable of noting any speed violations done by the drivers. They can determine whether the vehicle is consuming too much fuel or if the engine is producing any strange voices.
